ELA 9 Course Description
The goal for ELA 9 is to build a solid foundation of knowledge, skills, and strategies that will help students be successful in not only future English classes, but in life after high school. This year students will be introduced to the various genres of classic and contemporary narrative and informational texts that will be read and analyzed throughout high school. Major narrative texts will include A Christmas Carol, The Odyssey and Romeo and Juliet. Other units of study will include an introduction to high school reading and an introduction to high school writing, both of which will include the study of poetry. Students will work on listening, viewing and language skills through regular vocabulary enrichment and grammar practice while improving communication skills through class discussions, writing assignments and oral presentations. Students will also utilize reading strategies, maintain a reader response journal, a writing portfolio, and read one additional novel of their choosing per 9-week marking period. Students must have teacher approval for reading selections and complete the required assessment by the end of the term.
