Future Planning
Rule # 1-Identify your interests and talents. What are you good at? What do you love to do? What would you love to do everyday for the next 30 years? Make your career choice after considering these questions, then decide what you should do after high school. If your choice demands training, where can you get this training? On the job? in the service? at a 2-year tech school? at a 4-year university? Your future is filled with endless opportunities.
College is for Me!
Scholarship searches with the new searchable document should be easier than ever. Be sure to check often and really put your best effort into applying on time. Free money? Why not? Check out some of the websites below, and remember, there are plenty other such sites out there! (Just remember, you should never have to pay a "fee" for any information!)
Writing a Scholarship Essay
If you know you want to go to college after high school, you should also know that college costs money-lots of money! Earning scholarships is a great way to keep that college debt down, but most scholarship applications require you to write an essay (perhaps as a way to "weed out" the lazy applicants who don't want to take the time to write?) The most important thing to remember is to make sure they "see" and "hear" you while you convince them that you are the best investment for their money.
I'm Going to Work!
Don't forget to explore the Michigan Works page and to update your Linkedin page!
Linkedin Tips from Mrs. Leiker-
- Profile pictures should be added to the Linkedin Profile (not the grey head of death) & look professional. Senior Portraits are an excellent representation of putting your best foot forward.
- LinkedIn is not optional anymore. LinkedIn connections & endorsements are of the utmost importance after leaving high school. Be sure you make connections and impressions with those who have value in connecting and endorsing you. Your hard work in classes pay off here since teachers will endorse you in subjects they have taught you, if you actually worked hard to learn the material.

Preparation Tips for the Mock Interview/Career Fair Project from Mrs. Myllyla & Mrs. Leiker
- Get your Digital Student Portfolio perfectly in order before attending the Career Fair and before going out into the world beyond high school. Be sure to include EVERY example of videos produced, papers written, projects completed of which you are proud.
- Be sure to include your Weebly Digital Student Portfolio (website) and/or an About.Me page so your future employers will see you are taking care of your digital footprint. This is an important step in getting good jobs in this new era of technology.
- There are some who say that if you aren't using Twitter correctly, it is equivalent to being illiterate in today's society. How can a form of social media be so powerful? Join it and use it correctly to find out how Twitter is one of the most powerful way of learning more about a profession and forming connections that just aren't possible face-to-face. Improve your #DigCit & Digital Footprint, so you don't end up like the technology director story discussed in class (NVAS 'non' hire).
Farewell from N.H.S
- Gmail & YouTube should be converted over to a personal GMail before leaving NHS. Mrs. Myllyla and Mrs. Leiker will show you how. This should include any YouTube videos you have created for projects AND should include logging in to various websites to change their contact information and login to the new email address. Be sure to do this to keep from having to start new accounts & creating 'digital waste'.
- Don't forget the importance of your digital footprint and protection of your digital info. Change your passwords OFTEN!
